Things I Have Learned About Property Claims

First of all, read your policy.  Make sure you know what it covers and what it does not.  Acts of God, storms, may not be covered in certain circumstances.  Know the difference between wind and flood.  Just because it is a hurricane, flooding will not fall under hurricane.  If you do not have flood insurance, you may not have coverage for water.  During a storm, be careful where you park.  If you are under a tree owned by the city, don't expect the cities insurance to cover it.  Unless you can prove that the tree was dying and the city was negligent for not removing it, it will fall under Act of God.  That means your insurance will have to cover it.  Not just cars, fences, houses, etc.  One final piece of advice.  I live in Florida.  We have lift stations that take the waste from our houses to treatment plants.  During a storm, electrical disturbances can shut them down.  When that happens, your sewer my back up into your house.  A simple cleaning may not fix the problem.  You need to have Sewer Backup insurance to cover it.  Sewers backing up are not considered flooding.
